Spell to Animate a Painting

"Just a Couple of Girls" by Harry Wilson Watrous

In The Book of Spells, Theresa Billings finds a  spell that promises to animate a painting.  It’s said that, when cast correctly, the spell can bring a painting to life within its frame. Would the spell allow you to step into the scene within the painting? Better yet, would the people and things in the painting be able to step out of it? If we were going to try this spell, we’d start with a peaceful oil painting like Harry Wilson Watrous’ “Just a Couple of Girls.”  It makes us think of Catherine White and Eliza Williams starting The Billings Literary society. Strangely enough, Watrous is said to have painted this scene in the year 1915 . . . the same year that the Billings Girls discovered The Book of Spells.

Steps to cast the spell:

Step 1: Concentrate on the painting you’d like to animate.

Step 2: Quietly repeat the following phrase to yourself: “Images, immobile and trapped; move with life and breathe at last.”

Step 3: For best results, clasp hands with a practiced witch and recite the chant together.

If you could cast a spell to animate a painting, which painting would you choose?

    • Fiona says:

I totally agree, I wish shed just stay with the murder solving and drama and stuff instead of making a sudden turn to witches.

This is so wierd…. this is so not what the rest of her books are about . I dislike this very much, she should just stick to drama….

    • Erin says:

I know im not a huge fan of her getting into this bull crap. I liked the old stuff i guess she is running out of things to write about, *SPOILER ALERT!* even the idea of Noelle and Reed being sisters its kinda cute but its not her best work.

  8. ellie says:

i thought the book was boring in the others u would keep thinking and thinking about who did it this doesnt have a mystery…… so i think she could have added more to it but i love the whole idea of spells and witches but the book doesnt have a goood ending at all

I’m almost done with Book Of Spells.
    It’s just.. different.
I definitely haven’t read it as fast as I read the others.
I don’t like the whole set of it how its in the 1900′s like I feel Billings
has been made into something completely different, but when it first started it was just
a high class dorm reserved by the rich and beautiful.
The book was better than I expected though, I expected it to be worse it was alright.
But I just hope the last 2 books won’t be all filled up with this BLS and witchcraft stuff.

I just finished Book of Spells I liked it but
It was way different form what she has been writing and I think that Kate should really stick to the drama. BEcause I am really hoping that the last few books won’t be all about the BLS and whitchcraft and have none of the amazing drama Kate has put in all of the other books.

  11. Makayla says:

I havent read ominous yet, What happens? I am only on Vanished

  12. Montana says:

I just got done with Ominous and loved them all! I loved all the twists and shock in it as well as the unexpected endings, it makes it more interesting and less predictable. Although the ending is very sad, I think it was a good twist.

  13. Lucy says:

I loved book of spell and think it was a good way to twist up the series. My friends think it would be cool to be like the BLS! definatly one of the best books!!!!! Kate did a good job on this one!!!

  14. Milan says:

  15. Kaitlyn says:

  18. Shannon says:

I don’t like all of the witch craft themed books. It’s too far from the original, yeah it adds a twist but its far fetched.

i LOVE the whole private series. LOVED the drama. But now, at the end, with all the witchcraft and sisters and stuff, i love it even more! makes me wanna be a witch D: xD It’d be so cool if it actually worked. :/ can’t wait till the next book. xx

  20. Princess Faythe says:

From the way you guys describe it this book seems awesome. I put it on hold at my local library. But I stopped reading the private series after Suspicion and the last book I read in the Privilege series was Perfect Mistake. I have to start reading them again. Looks like I missed a lot of good stuff. As for the magic I think putting magic in her newest book makes the girls seem even cooler and the possibility of getting what you want when you want it leaves you feeling that anything is possible.

  21. awi says:

To make the spell work, don’t you need to form a coven of 11 witches first, and do the ritual?

  22. Briana says:

It’s so cool i tried it!

  23. Miss M says:

Of course magic is real, and it definately works. I would know. You just have to believe. Truly believe.

  24. avaia1997 says:

yea i think so 2 but not many people believe anymore
